Interventional Radiology

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures guided by imaging.

Interventional Radiology refers to all medical acts performed by radiologists for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, utilizing expertise in imaging techniques (Ultrasound, X-rays, and CT scans) to carry out minimally invasive maneuvers within the human body – such as the introduction of needles for biopsies or drug administration, manipulation of catheters within the bloodstream or other natural channels, under imaging control.

The acts performed in Interventional Radiology would be impossible to carry out safely without visual control, or would require surgical interventions with greater risk, suffering, and immobilization time for the patient.

Diagnostic Interventional Radiology

This involves diagnostic punctures under imaging control. They can be performed with fine or thick needles, respectively for cytological or histological studies (the former analyze cells and the latter analyze tissues of the organism). In either case, it involves accessing organs with potential disease, with the needle guided by real-time imaging methods.
