Bone Densitometry

Assessment of bone mineral density.

LagoaCentro has DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) technology and equipment, also known as Bifotonic Bone Densitometry, to measure the density and mineral content of bone in different areas of the body.

In most cases, studies focus on the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and the femoral neck, which provide insights into trabecular and cortical bone, respectively. Determinations can also be made in other regions, such as the wrist, or a whole-body scan may be requested, useful in the evaluation of endocrine diseases.

Bone Densitometry is a reliable test to determine early states of bone mass loss associated with Osteoporosis, a condition in which bone mineral density is decreased and the risk of fractures is increased.

These studies are reproducible, allowing measurements to be taken over time, showing disease progression and/or monitoring its evolution after treatment.

DEXA is a simple, painless examination that does not require sedation.

The exam lasts on average 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of regions to be studied, and does not require contrast or other invasive procedures.

DEXA is a technique that uses X-rays with a very low radiation dose, lower than that of a chest X-ray.

This technique is also used to assess the density and mineral content of bone in young patients, particularly those with conditions requiring corticosteroid use, which often decreases bone density, and oncological therapy regardless of age.

Preparation:

 1. On the day of the exam, you can eat normally, but you should avoid taking calcium or magnesium supplements for 24 hours prior.
 2. You should be able to provide information about the medication you take daily.
 3. If you are breastfeeding or there is a possibility of being pregnant, you should inform the technician in advance.
 4. Similarly, you should inform the technician if you have undergone scintigraphy, CT scans with oral or injectable contrast, or gastrointestinal barium studies in the previous days.
